The Clearwater Intermediate Middle School 6th grade Battle of the Books team won their League Championship Tournament on Wednesday, March 4 in Andale. The team went 9-0 in the round robin format and finished the season with a 16-0 record. This is the second consecutive year that the 6th grade team from CIMS has gone undefeated. Battle of the Books is coached by 6th grade English Language Arts teacher Brett Sardou.
Battle of the Books is an academic competition designed to promote literacy and teamwork by challenging students to demonstrate their reading comprehension through a fast-paced, "quiz bowl" style tournament. Teams of 6th-grade students spend months collectively reading a pre-selected list of 12 novels, ranging from award-winning contemporary fiction to timeless classics. During the live "battles," a moderator asks specific questions beginning with "In which book...", and students must quickly identify the correct title and author to earn points.
