State Assessment Newsletter

The Kansas Assessment Program (KAP) includes a variety of tests aligned to Kansas’ content standards, which help educators and policymakers evaluate student learning and meet the requirements for federal and state accountability.

Kansas State Department of Education and USD 264 are working to ensure 100% of our students graduate with the necessary skills to be successful individuals after high school graduation. The start of building a strong foundation begins at home as infants and toddlers. Like a building, the more solid the foundation, the stronger and longer lasting the building. Basic skills learned, practiced and mastered provide a solid foundation for higher-level skills and higher level learning to take place. Kansas content standards provide a guide of skills to master at each level.

Research shows students tend to perform better when testing on the original testing dates, vs. having to make up an assessment. We would greatly appreciate your assistance and support in scheduling appointments around your child’s testing dates and times, if possible.

How can parents and students make a positive difference in state assessments? See below for recommendations for being test ready!

  • Go to bed a little earlier, get a good night’s sleep, and eat something for breakfast to keep the brain active and functioning at a top notch level!
    • A peanut butter sandwich is a great choice and sticks with you!
  • Get to school on time (Get up a little earlier on testing days so not rushed or late)
  • Make sure you are in attendance on testing dates (check website for testing calendar)
  • Parents talk with your child about the importance of giving their best effort on their tests
    • Listening and reading all directions throughout all tests
    • Ask questions if you do not understand what to do
    • Stay focused on the test, use your time wisely
    • Don’t rush
    • Check over your answers when finished before submitting
    • Eliminate responses that are obviously not correct first, then decide among the remaining
    • Just take a deep breath and try your best! The goal is to do better than you did last year (personal goal)
